When Philip Malloy starts humming along to his school's daily playing of the Star Spangled Banner, his insistence on continuing to do so even after his teacher, Miss Margaret Narwin, asks him to stop sets in motion a chain of events that will soon ripple out beyond anything Phil or Miss Narwin could have imagined. Phil's friends, his teachers, and the school administration are soon swept up in the controversy... and that's just the beginning!

Avi's award-winning story about an act of rebellion gone awry is brought to life in this brief but powerful audio production. Mikey Mousaw portrays Philip Malloy, a ninth grader who has nonchalant and nave tones except when he's talking about track (which he loves) or Ms. Narwin (whom he despises). When Phil openly disrupts Ms. Narwin's class in an attempt to be transferred out of her homeroom, the ever patient teacher--portrayed by Katie Gibson--has her honesty and intentions called into question by Phil's parents, portrayed by Carmen Crafts and Mark Austen, and other school superiors. This expertly narrated full-cast performance will keep listeners engaged until the misunderstanding finally comes to a head and the truth is revealed. V.T. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine

Structured as a series of journal entries, memos, letters and dialogues, this highly original novel emerges as a witty satire of high school politics, revealing how truth can easily become distorted. After Philip Malloy, a clownish, rather unmotivated freshman, is punished for causing a disturbance (humming ``The Star Spangled Banner''), facts about the incident become exaggerated until a minor school infraction turns into a national scandal. Philip's parents, several reporters and a neighbor (who happens to be running for the school board) accuse the school of being unpatriotic. Philip gains fame as a martyr for freedom; his homeroom teacher, Miss Narwin, however, faces dismissal from her job. After gleaning the points of view of many characters, readers will side with Miss Narwin and will recognize the hollowness of Philip's eventual victory. It is clear that Avi ( The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle ) is attuned to the modern high school scene. With frankness and remarkable insight, he conveys the flaws of the system while creating a story that is both entertaining and profound. Ages 11-up.
