Grades K-2 In a nameless big city full of towering skyscrapers and elevated trains, a young girl named Rosa and her older sister, Maria, set out to save their local library, which is destined for demolition. At first, it's only the two of them bringing signs to the abandoned space. Scoffed at by the developers, they determine to get more visibility for their cause by selling baked goods, dressing up as book characters, and raising banners that proclaim, ""Closed books = Closed minds."" The prospects of restoring the library seem slim, however, until Mom and Dad and dozens of others come around to their side and begin to protest, too. People power gets colorful treatment in Alexander's illustrations, which burst at the seams with those who appreciate a space to learn. While the book begins with nearly empty bookshelves cobwebbed and forlorn, the last spreads show a warm, cozy space filled with a diverse range of people enjoying shelves filled with titles to check out. What library lover wouldn't want to see this book on their shelves?
